Bouin: La Vielleuse Habile
La Vielleuse Habile (The Skilful Hurdy-Gurdy Player) is the largest and most comprehensive of the 18th century French methods. It was originally published in 1761 in Paris. The edition that I have created is a complete transcription and translation (French to English) of the major pedagogical section i.e. All the text in English and French and the musical examples. The edition is laid out as a more or less parallel  text so that the reader has the option of attempting a better reading of the occasionally very awkward French. Musical examples that in the original are widely separated from the text appear here within the body of the text and , whereas in the original they are written on the French violin clef they have here been transposed and clearly laid out in the normal treble clef. The original text comprises, in principle, of 3 parts: pedagogical text; 44 lessons; and 2 Suites in C and G comprising in excess of 70 pieces. This edition is the pedagogical section only. The 44 lessons will follow separately, as perhaps will the 2 giant suites.
"For the hurdy-gurdy player interested in eighteenth-century music, the methods of Bouin and Dupuits are required reading.  For many the language problem is almost insurmountable, especially in the case of Dupuits, whose prolix prose is a challenge even for native speakers.  For these reasons, these English-language versions are especially welcome and should be of great assistance in exploring period interpretation." Dupuit: Principles of Hurdy-Gurdy Playing
Principe pour toucher de la Vielle was published in 1741 (Paris) and is thus the earliest of the major methods. This edition follows the pattern of the Bouin in having complete parallel texts (French to English) and in-line musical examples transposed into modern clef and clearly laid out. The original includes 6 large sonatas that are of doubtful viability and these very dense 34 pages are not included. However, as a special feature of this work, where Dupuit's text has a movement by movement analysis of how the pieces are to be played I have included thematic examples into the body of the translation in order that the maximum possible education can be gained from Dupuit's remarks. The provision of this context makes the of the remarks far more easy to understand. The original text is prohibitively difficult to read through primitive printing and fading.

Baton op 3, Duet Sonata #5
This is the easier of the two duet sonatas of op.3.
The original, or facsimiles of the originals, are written on the French violin clef and many people find this difficult to read. These originals probably SHOULD be freely available to everyone. However, these modern editions are the result of many hours of difficult, eye straining and very boring, hard work so I hope that friends will forgive the nominal charge.

Digital download as a 7 page pdf file.

N.Chedeville, 6 Selected Pieces in C from Op.10.
Six selected duets for 2 Hurdy-Gurdies or Musette de Cour in C major
from

Nicholas Chedeville's opus 10 collection entitled 'Les Idee Francoises ou les Delices De Chambray'.

The collection includes the very beautiful pieces La Mer Egee (The Aegean Sea) and Le Bosquet de Flore (Flowery Bower) of 116 and 72 bars of music respectively. That is to say that these pieces are relatively largescale compositions. The other pieces are: La Voute Verte; Le Robillard; La Solitude; and, La Feste de Vilage.

This edition comprises BOTH facsimiles of the original music in French violin clef AND modern transcription and setting into standard treble clef.

The original manuscript being written on the French violin clef which places the Treble clef on the bottom line of the stave as opposed to the second line where we are these days used to seeing it: making the music difficult or impossible for many readers to play.

I have reset the music by transcribing it and laying it out upon the page for maximum clarity. I have taken great pains not to add or subtract anything from the score so I would like to offer it as an Urtext. In this case one can, anyway, check the original.

There are 21 sheets of music included in this collection.
